The Disappearance of Childhood

As the father of a 3 year old, it's a subject that's very close to my heart! And so, this book - Disappearance of Childhood (first introduced to me by Santosh Desai in a job interview:-) 5 years back was part of my must-buy list!

Bob, my couch-surfing friend from Kansas City finally gifted me the book! And it came in mail a few days back.

A great read it's turning out to be. Oh, it's by Neil Postman, an American educator, media theorist and cultural critic.

The central hypothesis - A society that uses mass media/ all media to subject children to the full impact of adult cultural environment - as American TV does(and closer home our TV) - abolishes the very concept of childhood.

All of us can be inclined to resignation, resistance, reform or rebellion vis-a-vis the swift currents of the TV/ Internet age...But none of us can fail to be enlightened and provoked by the 'DoC'...
