From 'Wall Street'

Was going through the Blockbuster, UK list (a voted one) of top 20 movie speeches and found this one made by Michael Douglas in Wall Street (1987) as number 5 on it. Sums up the 'Greed economy', Capitalism, USA, KBC etc and the larger part of the world pretty well.

"The point is, ladies and gentleman, is that greed - for lack of a better word - is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms - greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind. And Greed - you mark my words - will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

Interestingly, none of the top 20 speeches are from a female lead...

And 7th on the list is this from Trainspotting (1996):

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family, Choose a big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends... Choose your future. Choose life."

See some connection???

Blasphemous as this may sound, I'd put Abhishek 'Guru' Desai's speech in this list. His closing line is perhaps the most perfect closing line I have ever heard.

Years ago when I worked in NY, I used Malcolm Douglas' rant at the Korean grocery owner in "Falling Down" ("50 cents for a ****ing Coke?!") juxtaposed with his "greed is good" segment from Wall Street to demonstrate how the economy had changed vs the '80s. Typically nifty sleight of hand that video lets you do when you work with it, and it would be interesting to see similar juxtapositions from Hindi cinema in presentations.
