Thot bubbled #16

It's amazing the kind of blanket statements Al Ries gets away with. For instance, in one of his more recent articles in the Advertising Age he shills "consumers buy brands not companies." That's just not true.

To a certain extent I would think this would be debatable.

I think a case in example would be a HLL product which have such strong branding that the HLL name remains only on the packaging label and not in the commercials of the ad. In which case you are buying the brand and not the company. I mean you typically say I buy a "Clinic All Clear Shampoo" NOT that I use a "HLL shampoo".

However, I did notice that recently TVCs of HLL products show the HLL logo as the last screen of the ad.

And then again you have something like Real Chicken from Godrej in which case the product gains it quality assurance because it comes from Godrej and not because it's branded as "Real Chicken".

Would love to hear other people commenting on this topic.

Good point. And HLL is a great example of why people don't just buy brands but also into companies. If Clinic was from some company called Ladoosingh Cosmetics, people wouldn stay very far away from it.
