Thot bubbled #46

Ok, now does this mean we're going to be working less or working more? I thought technology was supposed to give us more free time. I guess that's just another canard conjured up by advertising people like us to sell technology. Anyway, any answers?

I think laptops allow one to do what they want to do with them - work more or work less. They achieve that by ensuring you don't have to be in a particular place to work.

The secondary point here is does laptop/computer = work? It isn't for me and I suspect it isn't for a lot of other people too.

Having said that, laptops have been outselling PCs in the US for some time now. No one's complaining about doing more work there, or so I think.

I disagree. Laptops mean more work. I think the whole world will agree that time has become scarcer and scarcer. Even the latest Blackberry ads talk about keeping 'Daddy out of the office'... so he can do more office work. I agree that the Blackberry is not a laptop but it is in the same space, i.e., productivity deice. The reason people are going in for laptops and other mobile productivity devices is so they aren't tied down and can be more productive no matter where they are. Laptops equal productivity and productivity is almost always about work. Jump in, Gang.

agree with blaiq that laptops allow you to do more of whatever you want to do. I sat at a coffee shop the other day, mailed photos to friends in France & wrote a brief. It was much nicer than being locked up in office + I got all 3 done quicker. Better coffee too. However, with tech there comes dependence. How many of us would blow a fuse if our cell fones or laptops suddenly died on us? And sometimes, I find that it's easier to work with my notebook and an old stubby pencil than lots of fancy gadgets and e files.
