For Google, being the world's information Suez Canal has its advantages. Chief among them is knowing in great detail what kind of information is flowing through the system. Keen to share this with the rest of the world, Google has been compiling "search trends, patterns and surprises" at Google Zeigeist every year.
This year's list has caused much debate largely due to an unclear definition of what Google meant by "most popular" - their 2006 list has 'Bebo' as the top search word for 2006. After much turmoil in the blogosphere, Google has clarified that 'Bebo' was not the top search word for 2006 but the one that gained the most in relation to 2005.
Regardless of the controversy, Google Zeitgeist 2006 does serve as one way of freeze-framing the year just gone by. Happy exploring!
