Shilpa Shetty & Big Brovaaaaaaz

This came from an Amul butter hoarding I saw yesterday in lucknow. damn, wish I had taken pix. Had the muppet on a couch with the big bro type logo and said 'big butter

So hey! Big Brother - shameful marketing, very entertaining, love to hate it, sadly addictive, causes major debates each season. Endemol thrives on this (btw that always sounds like a pharma company to me)

This time around - we got the indian starlet (starlot?) facing 'racism' and we got Gordon Brown taking a 'stand' (complete with stock expression), sponsors pulling out, everyone going mental. And then a statement saying it's Shilpa hasn't been the subject of any racist abuse. huh!

Marketing Jazz hands or a real example of attitudes towards asians? What say you?

My two cents: I initially thot it was being totally over hyped, I mean.. gimme a break. Lots of english ppl find real indian food far too spicy - these ones are just rude and they're being paid to create a buzz. When you have Jade Goody like chavs in there, ofc there will be some random rubbish thrown around. I think the media hyped it up, viewers took up the cause and it's been blown way outta prop. The Paki bit was totally racist - But dog - hey there's dogs all over the world!

Good thing: anti bully awareness, some amount of Asian awareness.

Bad thing: the boy who cried wolf? possibly over sensitivity, another reason for Indian morale police to deliver a lecture?

What else?

OR is this 'racism' real? And what's that mean for the show/ contestants/ publicity now on? I bet Shilpa will make it to the final 3 at least -I've got Rs. 500 on her. anyone else?

yeh sab paapi TRP ke liye hai! Blame it all on ratings!

the interesting aspect is that we never got to know about her inclusion in the show...am surprised how the Desi tabloids couldnt get this scoop. and then, suddenly we hear that she is facing racism...

you know what, maybe she shouldve done a zidane style headbutt...mor TRPs wouldve happened...cheers!

During the row with Jade Shilpa said: “I’m not going to dignify this. Oh please learn some manners. You know what you need? You need ETIQUETTE classes Jade.” and Jade and the other bitches heard it wrong - They heard "You need ELOCUTION classes!"

The Sun picked up the story and they also heard it as ELOCUTION rather than ETIQUETTE.

Man this is real mess

Ha ha ha .. Jade Goody needs both classes, desperately! Good for Shilpa. Sun rubbish paper newayz. Wonder what Guardian is saying. must look up.

Meraj - agree it's the war of the TRPs. I read about her in the show on BBC website a few weeks ago. Was also pretty surprised it didnt get covered here. guess it takes a controversy for that to happen.

BTW can you see Shilpa head butting Jade? *pooof* Shilpa would disappear in the blubber. Wonder if we can make a cartoon film on this.. hmm hmm hmm

Maybe I am just a bit too tuned into these things, but I was aware of Shilpa getting into the BB house before it happened. It was in the TV news mostly.

It's a game of TRPs that has indeed gone awry. With their primary sponsor withdrawing, I am sure the producers have armtwisted the particpants into apologising, and in Shilpa's case, retracting a statement.

But still, Jane and Shilpa go head to head for eviction today :)

My money is on Shilpa winning. Any takers?

So you think Shilpa will win because that will be good for TRPs? And it might also spawn a brand extension of Big Brother in India? I know there's Big Boss but the lure of a 'Bhai' out of India is quite a delicious thought.

hmm.. i think 'big brother' in india.. as bade bhaiya kinda thing has such sweet, caring, protective connotations... but just bhai.. man, it'd be really fun.. could we do a politicians spesh?!

big boss must be a licensed spin off, i think? shud look this up

Yep, fink, it is (a legal spinoff)

What a year it's been for relatively minor stars (when compared to SRK or AB). First, Rakhi Sawant on Big Boss, and now this fracas.

I can't fathom for the life of me what this is supposed to indicate - other than every single opportunity to become a celebrity must be exploited.

The other interesting bit is the entire seeking redemption in the public eye bit. Will the future see more debates coming to the fore?

Both Shilpa and Rakhi had a tough time. And perhaps, Shilpa's situation is slightly more "serious" in a sense.

Also, Congrats blaiq - you've won the wager.

Adding to what Harshal has to say, the name was changed from Big Brother to Bigg Boss, because the producers felt the lay Indian might not recognise/understand/relate to the Orwellian concept of Big Brother. Also the concept of 'big brother' is a lot more sympathetic and protective here. The extra 'g' in Bigg was added at the advice of a numerologist.

And Harshal, I meant my money is on Shilpa winning the entire game and not just her personal showdown with Jade (who I mistakenly referred to as Jane in an earlier comment.)

I have a feeling Jade Goody will be etched in Indian textbooks as a national villain - right after General Dyer (of Jallianwala Bagh fame.)
