DABBA WALAS OR MBA WALAS

today morning I was watching a program on tv about Mumbai Dabbawalas. Their penchant for accuracy and customer service. Much has talked about and written about them. They are a case of reverse take on MNCs like HSBC claiming to be the world's local bank. Here is a home grown institution that is showing way to world about logistics, cusotmer management and six sigma etc....stressing that local insights can work on a global platform.

Another example that comes to my mind is our good old laloo, who turned a white elephant of indian railways into a proud, profit making jumbo and is taking classes for management students.

as Gandhiji said India does (also) lives in its villages: my reading -the true potential of our country is just not the big minds of corporate world, it can be the home grown talent without managment degrees...be it laloo or the dabbawallas

Another good example though not Indian but closer home is the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh established by Mohammed Yunus. Their NPA's are the least and almost nil. Am sure there a lot of lessons to be learnt from that too. Am sure there are lot of the likes of Dabawallah's hidden in the interiors of our country. Unfortunately our Media does not think its worthwhile to track these stories and bring to the limelite.

great example - am totally impressed by their logistics management - I think global corporates have much to learn from these homegrown brilliant strategists!! btw has anyone ever tried to do a cross promo with the dabba walas?

The Entrepreneur came before the MBA did.
It was later that we decided to provide formal guidelines to those interested in running a business and give them a 'degree'
But still, only those who have the knack can do a good job irrespective of whether they have an MBA or not.

I think Airtel tried selling their prepaid cards through the dabba walas. They sold the idea of an additional revenue stream for them or something like that. Am not sure. Faintly remember reading about it in some article.

I haven't read in depth the logistic management of the dabbawalas so can't comment on the learnings!! But 'Laloo' might well be a lucky-as-hell-buffoon!

He totally mismanaged the state of Bihar for a decade and a half! So, I hugely suspect his administrative skills...The IIMs must be stringent with their invitations LOL...But then Jade Goody has also been invited by the tourism ministry:-)

The railways turn-around has been catalysed largely by the silent work of Nitish Kumar, who was the railways minister before Laloo...and also two kick-ass IAS officers under laloo...

yes the turn-around is real. This rant is mostly in reaction to the media that loves to prop up smooth talking jokers:-)

Like all great leaders, Laloo is making the most of a circumstances, a good team and 9% growth.
